Each quarter, IQ Wired organizes a community project. Projects are nominated by team members and selected by a small committee within the company. Our project for the third quarter of 2012 was to clean up a section of the Platte River Trail in Littleton, Colorado. We gathered on a gorgeous Colorado September morning with pokers and trash bags… …put on our protective gear… …and stashed our cell phones… …before walking the trail for 2 hours, picking up trash… …and …

In the second quarter of 2010, one of IQ Wired's quarterly community projects was to provide basic supplies to homeless people in downtown Denver. The project was nominated by Eric Coley. Back in his Texas hometown, Eric and a small group of his friends would each get together, pitch in some money, go to the grocery store for some baked chickens and noodles and prepare it in a huge pot. Then, they would go to a shelter equivalent of the Denver Rescue Mission to give dinner to the homeless people in the area. After serving them, they would spend the evening chatting and relaxing with …

Companies are using more and more bandwidth every day. As a result, the number of request for fiber-based fast services has rapidly increased of late. Services delivered over fiber are highly desirable, generally affordable and always scalable. In my experience with IQ Wired and the telecom industry in general, I have found that one of the most important things for companies to assess when making a decision as to whom the proper support will be for their businesses, is the potential longevity of the relationships and entities they are evaluating as telecom partners. We so often hear of the turn over related to folks associated with direct staff of different vendors. It seems that the “average life span” of direct folks seems to be no longer than 6-9 months. This isn’t necessarily concrete, but it is in fact what …

Do you know the difference between a DSS voice circuit and a PRI? Some carriers offer two types of voice T1 circuits, one called a DSS and one called a PRI. Both T1’s offer voice calls with DID’s (Direct Inward Dialing). The circuit that is most commonly known as a DSS circuit offers 24 trunks that in turn can make and receive 24 simultaneous calls. The outgoing calls on a DSS circuit will not show the name of the company making the call, the calls will show up as unknown or out of area with no number associated with the call. The circuit that is known as a PRI, or also ca …

First and foremost one should make sure they are looking at an apples to apples comparison. Some carriers do not offer certain applications in their offering (i.e. LD minutes, web hosting with SEO options, some offer a couple of analog lines as a free add on to a full PRI, etc.). Equally as important is making sure that each carrier disclose additional taxes and fees. Some carriers will include certain taxes and fees in the base price while others will strip it out of the offering to make their product look more attractive on the front end. The difference in these ta …

Most telecommunications providers have incorporated auto renewal clauses into their agreements in an effort to reduce the amount “churn” in their customer base. Carrier contracts will typically auto renew unless the customer provides written notification to the carrier of their intent to cancel service or revert to month to month billing within a specified period of time prior to the end of the contract (typically most carriers require 30 to 60 days written notice). Regularly customers will lose track of when their contracts are set to expire (due to change in manage …

The Case for Carrier Network Management Services: Today’s networks for a multi-site environment are infrastructure intensive. This infrastructure is costly, environmentally sensitive and absolutely mission critical. Further, multi-data center strategies for redundancy or disaster recovery have added to this infrastructure. The number of routers, switches and firewalls running in synchronized fashion necessary for production and replication traffic can be very significant. When a route or piece of equipment goes down for any reason, the results can be annoyi …
